From the introduction: We all need heroes, people to admire, to see as examples of how human beings should live. But I prefer to see Bartolomé de Las Casas as a hero, for exposing Columbus's violent behavior against the Indians he encountered in the Bahamas. I prefer to see the Cherokee Indians as heroes, for resisting their removal from the lands on which they lived. To me, it is Mark Twain who is a hero, because he denounced President Theodore Roosevelt after Roosevelt praised an American general who had massacred hundreds of people in the Philippines. Vonnegut accurately names the Bush medical ailment as that of having a psychopathic personality. This fits Bush and his associates and their behaviour like a glove. They have no guilt for their many lies and no remorse for their crimes. They feel justified in whatever they do. Thus Bush claims he is in communication with God who advises him. This kind of delusion in a 'so-called' Christian country like the US is accepted as perfectly normal. To the true believers this delusion is real and meritorious. It proves Bush is a man of God and is therefore virtuous and heavenly inspired. Bush's followers show that belief reinforces the Bush delusion, thus helping immunize Bush against advice contrary to his own psychopathic wishes and impulses.
Enlightened Americans will have to stop Bush and his associates with impeachment before he can destroy more countries and trigger a World War III.

At a Barnes & Noble in Bayside, N.Y. a book reading and signing of The Scar of David by Susan Abulhawa scheduled for Thursday, May 24th was reduced to a book signing only. The reason Barnes & Noble gave for canceling the reading portion of Abulhawa's visit was due to ‘sensitivity' to the Jewish Community, space limitations and the author's safety, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations of New York (CAIR-NY).

The recent of Saddam Hussein may have turned "regime change" into a contemporary buzzword, but it's been a tactic of American foreign policy for more than 110 years. Beginning with the ouster of Hawaii's monarchy in 1893, Kinzer runs through the foreign governments the U.S. has had a hand in toppling.

It's amazing that Fidel Castro managed to survive all the US assassination attempts to kill him. Castro has introduced many reforms in all fields, particularly free health and educational services. Given the record of US installed and supported military dictatorships in Latin America, will the Bush regime, or those that may take over the Bush mantle, go back to this strategy?

The Secret War series In a highly readable and informative style, Fabián Escalante reviews over four decades of attempts to kill Fidel Castro—involving weapons that ranged from exploding cigars and poison pens to grenades and bazookas. As the former director of Cuban counterintelligence, Escalante played a significant role in frustrating many of these assassination plans, made by the CIA and the Mafia under a project codenamed "Executive Action." Although melodramatic and at times quite comical, these plots were deadly serious—and illegal, as subsequent U.S. government inquiries such as the 1975 Church Commission concluded.

Every would be dictatorship tries to control the content, bias and slant of information fed to their publics. This applies particularly if they are deliberately lying to their publics and planning to gain public support for their wars. Once they start a war, they have many other opportunities to legislate for funds to fight the war, as well as legislate laws such as The Patriot Act that will facilitate the establishment of the planned shift from  democracy to dictatorship. You may remember ex-CIA agent Ralph McGeehee who toured NZ for us back in the 80's. He said, and books by ex-CIA people also confirm that, the CIA often uses right-wing religious groups like EBs as a cover to channel funds to groups in countries the CIA wants to influence. In NZ we do know the US wants to get rid of NZ N-Free legislation and get NZ back on track sending NZ troops to US wars and hosting their warships. So it makes sense to suspect that perhaps the CIA has a role in supplying money and direction to NZ EBs for this purpose.

There's a certain irony in that while papers in New Zealand devote their first few pages to the demise of Don, across the Tasman the Melbourne Age leads with a story about Exclusive Brethren involvement in the Victoria state elections.
It's the same old stuff. The EBs have taken out advertising in the Age and the Herald Sun attacking the Greens.

James Lovelock is among the planet's most interesting and productive scientists. His invention of an electron capture device that was able to detect tiny amounts of chemicals enabled other scientists both to understand the dangers of DDT to the eggshells of birds and to figure out the ways in which chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were eroding the ozone layer. He's best known, though, not for a gadget but for a metaphor: the idea that the earth might usefully be considered as a single organism (for which he used the name of the Greek earth goddess Gaia) struggling to keep itself stable.

For a long time I've wondered why, in the home of freedom and democracy, there is not more outraged liberal reaction to the phoney and contrived "wars on terror".
After reading Tony Judt's article, I now understand. It will not be surprising if Bush succeeds in converting America into a fascist state in all but name. That is because there does not appear to be much intelligent opposition to Bushism. Tony mentions so many prominent liberals who have quickly converted to defending and justifying Bush war madness against the newly coined but non-existent 'Islamo-fascism'.

Norman Solomon is the author of the new book War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death. More than any other New York Times reporter, Judith Miller took the lead with stories claiming that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
Now, a few years later, she's facing heightened scrutiny in the aftermath of a pair of articles that appeared in the Times on Sunday—a lengthy investigative piece about Miller plus her first-person account of how she got entangled in the case of the Bush administration's "outing' of Valerie Plame as a CIA agent.

James Risen's book shows that In 2002 the CIA had testimony from many Iraq sources that Iraq's WMD or nuclear programme had been dead for 10 years.
Nevertheless the CIA gave the Bush Administration what it wanted - an "intelligence estimate that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear program." The Bush Administration planned a war with Iraq and had the CIA provide what they called "intelligence" to provide material they could use as justification.
This case illustrates that the CIA is also a propaganda agency and much of its material is produced to suit the political objectives of the Administration. It is yet another expensive tool of the state used to fool the American people.

Excellent Source Of Independent Journalists and News

A political and media onslaught is about to be unleashed with the indictments of a whole host of key White House officials (including you-know-who) caught up in the Plamegate coverup. The unraveling of this potentially treasonous scandal -- which began with the outing, for political reasons, of a covert CIA officer -- could well provide the tipping point that will allow the Democrats to retake the House in the next election, initiate Congressional investigations of Bush Administration crimes, and possibly even pass an impeachment resolution.

Although this book was written in 1993, it is an excellent source book on the basic dangers of an accidental nuclear war that destroys our planet. He details many near misses. As a previous minute-man officer he is well-qualified to write such a book. The end of the cold war and the disintegration of the Soviet Union has not eliminated the threat posed to international security by nuclear weapons. The Soviet breakup actually created a new set of dangers: the accidental or unauthorized use of nuclear weapons and the illicit transfer of nuclear warheads, technology, or expertise to the Third World.

For those military officers who were sitting on the fence, the Kennedy administration's botched Bay of Pigs invasion was the last straw. "The Bay of Pigs fiasco broke the dike," said one report at the time. "President Kennedy was pilloried by the super patriots as a 'no-win' chief . . . The Far Right became a fount of proposals born of frustration and put forward in the name of anti-Communism. . . The most recent among many testing glitches of the Bush administration missile defense program should remind us that this exorbitant and heavily politicized effort should be scrapped. Until September 11, in the eyes of conservatives, the litmus test for patriotism was support for missile defense. Now they have moved on to view backing for the troubled Iraq War as the badge of armchair courage. Yet the 9/11 attacks demonstrated that the missile defense program did not address the most severe threats facing the United States.
The most serious threats to the U.S. homeland won’t arrive by missile. They’ll likely be attacks using either conventional means—as on 9/11—or nuclear, biological or chemical weapons smuggled into the country by ship or delivered by small aircraft. Terrorists are unlikely to have the technology to develop the long-range missiles that a missile defense system is designed to intercept using other missiles or lasers.

THE EMPIRE HAS NO CLOTHES   U.S. Foreign Policy Exposed

Most Americans don’t think of their government as an empire, but in fact the United States has been steadily expanding its control of overseas territories since the turn of the twentieth century. Now, through political intimidation and over 700 military bases worldwide, the U.S. holds sway over an area that dwarfs the great empires of world history.
In The Empire Has No Clothes, Ivan Eland, a leading expert on U.S. defense policy and national security, examines American military interventions around the world from the Spanish-American War to the invasion of Iraq.

...In his 1974 book, "The Permanent War Economy," he composed a long list of military trade-offs. The money spent on one Huey helicopter, he said, could buy 66 low-priced homes, while a recent $69 million reduction in child-nutrition programs represented the cost of two DE-1052 destroyer escorts. He added, "To eliminate hunger in America = $4-5 billion = C-5A aircraft program."

Before he passed away this month, Seymour Melman had completed a concise book manuscript titled, "Wars, Ltd.: The Rise and Fall of America's Permanent War Economy". He was having trouble finding a good publisher, when I spoke with him earlier this summer.
But he will leave a legacy of wisdom, insight, humanity, consistency, and diligence. In a society whose rulers and corporatists seal the people off from such magnificent minds and inundate them with trivia, distraction and the hot air artists daily bellowing their lucrative ignorance, sagacious Americans like Seymour Melman will not receive the attention the citizenry deserves unless we the people, who own the public airwaves, begin to control and use our own media rights

Why are the thousands of disgruntled GIs, their families and Veterans who question Bush's wisdom and veracity in e-mails and letters sent to Michael Moore rarely, if at all, represented in the mainstream media?
That is because the White House pretty much controls what comes through the mainstream media pipeline, particularly on television. Television news portrays the Karl Rove image of Bush surrounded by adoring, supportive troops in carefully choreographed photo-ops.
