Accidental or Intentional Nuclear War?

Comment by Larry Ross, August 8, 2005

Although this book was written in 1993, it is an excellent source book on the basic dangers of an accidental nuclear war that destroys our planet. He details many near misses. As a previous minute-man officer he is well-qualified to write such a book. Bruce Blair is now president of the Centre for Defense Information in Washington, and the author of many new papers updating these dangers.

However the Bush Administration has added a new dimension to this problem. That is the increasing danger of an intentional nuclear war. Both Bush, and Blair for the UK, threatened to use nuclear weapons against Iraq before they invaded, if Saddam used chemical weapons to defend Iraq.

Also, Bush has lowered the threshold of possible nuclear weapon use by changing nuclear doctrines to allow nuclear weapons to be used in conventional military situations. As the US military is extended by the worsening of their illegal war on Iraq, it is possible that if a new war is launched against Iran the US may implement the new doctrine 'in order to avoid defeat and save American lives etc'. That the US put their men in such a situation, and intended to use nuclear weapons, will not likely be mentioned by a compliant media that consistently supports the Bush war even though many of the lies were known before the invasion.

Also, local commanders are now authorised to recommend the use of nuclear weapons if they feel they need such weapons in threatening situations.

The American people have shown they will accept such excuses ... whether true or false. As the litany of lies Bush used to fool people into supporting his war proves, they will accept such lies as truth, even when later exposed. That's why Bush still repeats many of lies.

"The bigger the lie, the more people will believe it" Hitler said. He might have added "In my dictatorship dissenting views will not be tolerated, and dissenters may be shot or imprissoned."

Yet this doctrine has worked even in the land of 'freedom and democracy' where dissent was once an honoured tradition. The US 'free press' has helped make it possible by endlessly repeating the lies, and never admitting they were lies or apologising to their readers for misleading them.

The technique of lying has proved effective to justify the conventional war on Iraq which killed over 100,000 people in Iraq...so far.. The Bush neocon administration was rewarded with a second term for Bush. They will not suddenly decide to abort and stop this kind of success of their own accord. They are likely to repeat it for the next war on their agenda - such as Iran.

Bush's consistent attempts to normalise the possible use of nuclear weapons, suggests he will apply the same kind of deceitful techniques to justify nuclear war. Consider the coupling of this technique of lying to get support for the strategy you want with the techniques of covert action and counterinsurgency where the US itself commits terrorist acts and then blames 'the terrorists' in order to justify ever more repression, slaughter and 'keeping US troops in Iraq'.

Add to that the many possible ways that accidental nuclear war can happen and you can imagine how an unscrupulous regime could arrange a nuclear war and make it look accidental.

There is also Bush's doctrine of pre-emptive war (successfully used in Iraq) and pre-emptive nuclear war, which can be based on just about any excuses the President wishes to use.

These are some of the reasons why it is the most dangerous time in human history, and why Dr Helen Caldicott expects there will be a nuclear war during Bush's second term.

The Logic of Accidental Nuclear War
Book by Bruce G. Blair
1993

The end of the cold war and the disintegration of the Soviet Union has not eliminated the threat posed to international security by nuclear weapons. The Soviet breakup actually created a new set of dangers: the accidental or unauthorized use of nuclear weapons and the illicit transfer of nuclear warheads, technology, or expertise to the Third World.
