Cancer in Iraq Vets Raises Possibility of Toxic Exposure

by Carla McClain
August 23, 2007

After serving in Vietnam nearly 40 years ago - and receiving the Bronze Star for it - the Tucson soldier was called back to active duty in Iraq.
While there, he awoke one morning with a sore throat. Eighteen months later, Army Sgt. James Lauderdale was dead, of a bizarrely aggressive cancer rarely seen by the doctors who tried to treat it.
As a result, his stunned and heartbroken family has joined growing ranks of sickened and dying Iraq war vets and their families who believe exposures to toxic poisons in the war zone are behind their illnesses - mostly cancers, striking the young, taking them down with alarming speed.

DU Weapons Education

comment by Larry Ross
August 16, 2007

The following article will activate people to order the Poison DUst Educators Pack from the US and educate others, particularly students, about this insidious and long term threat to everyone on the planet. DU will be with us for eternity as it has a 4.4 billion year half life. The US and UK are lying when they claim it does not cause any permanent threat. Their own scientists and military warn that it is a permanent and growing threat to humanity.
But US and UK politicians continue to order it's use extensively for their illegal wars. Informing others about DU, using this and related material, would be a very worthwhile project for any individual or group. The Christchurch branch of The Peace Foundation has a display of the horrors it is causing to the people who are exposed to DU poisoning. Enquiries to resources@fps.pl.net Google DU for more information and see this site, DU Weapons

US Using Nuclear Weapons in Iraq

comment by Larry Ross
June 23, 2007

DU weapons spread toxic radioactive dust wherever they are used. With a half life of 4 billion years, the poisonous effects are gradually spreading around the world causing death and disease. It is like a slow motion form of nuclear war against all humanity, insidiously and secretly drifting world-wide, infecting millions. The US has slyly introduced a form of nuclear weapon and then lied. They claim DU weapons are harmless. The poisonous effects may manifest years later in the form of cancer, genetic mutations in the children of exposed people and a range of other diseases.
Remember!
Present and increasing DU dust in our global environment can cause mutations in anyone's children, grandchildren and future generations forever. Banning DU weapons and educating others about DU is everyone's responsibility.

Antiwar Radio: Scott Horton Interviews Rep. Ron Paul

August 17, 2007

Presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul discusses the economic consequences of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the scars of PTSD and the administration's betrayal of wounded veterans, how nice it would be if the War Party had to clean up the DU, why the U.S. should withdraw from Iraq as soon as physically possible, the role of the Military-Industrial-Complex in determining foreign policy, the likelihood and possible consequences of war with Iran for our troops in Iraq, our economy, and our liberty, why all the tax money spent militarily “securing” recourses is being wasted due to a mistaken and outdated mercantilist understanding of economics, the failure of the Congressional Democrats to check the war powers of the president, why U.S. intervention on behalf of Israel is bad for us, bad for them and bad for their neighbors, America's deteriorating relationship with Russia and China and why the U.S. government should stay out of Darfur.   Depleted Uranium: Pernicious Killer Keeps on Killing
by Craig Etchison, Ph.D.
February 19, 2007

What is DU and Why Is It a Problem?
An Air Force officer is even stalking the internet, trying to intimidate anyone who suggests DU is anything but benign.
Yet the numbers suggested that something insidious happens when DU munitions are used. How to explain the exploding rates of cancer, birth defects, and radiation poisoning among Iraqis in the Basra region? How to explain a Department of Veterans Affairs study of 21,000 veterans of the Gulf War that found rates of birth defects were twice as great for male vets and three times as great for female vets who served in the Gulf War compared to vets who did not? How to explain a Washington Post report in January of 2006 that 518,00 of the 580,000 Gulf War veterans were on disability, over half on permanent disability. How to explain over 13,000 dead Gulf War veterans when only 250 were killed and 7,000 injured in the war itself?

  Refusal of Military Orders
Comment by Larry Ross
February 14, 2007

The war plans against Iran are based on a series of lies, false accusations and false and/or doctored intelligence. It is similar to the US basis for making illegal war on Iraq in 2003. The same techniques of war propaganda and tricks to deceive the public and mass media manipulation are being used.
The consequences of the war are likely to be far more disastrous than with the calamitous Iraq war and the public are now far more suspicious of the Bush Administration. It has now rejected his Iraq war and wants the troops brought home. So to get a measure of public support for a new major war, Bush is likely to stage a major act of provocation, such as a phoney terrorist attack on the US , then blame Iran and use it as a justification for war.

An Appeal to Conscience to Those Who Would Bomb Iran
by US Army Reserves Colonel (Retired) Ann Wright
February 13, 2007

George Bush is going to war again. We see it in the Bush administration's rhetoric about Iran's nuclear program. We see it in the Bush administration's commentary on Iran's reported role in training and equipping Iraqis who are fighting US forces that have invaded and occupied that country. We see it in the Bush administration's criticism of Iran's role in funding and equipping Hezbollah in Lebanon. We see it in the Bush administration's direction to the US military to detain Iranian diplomats in Iraq, breach diplomatic facilities, and capture or kill Iranian operatives in Iraq. We see it in the deployment of the third US Naval carrier group (twenty more ships) to the Gulf.

Agent Orange on Vietnam Like DU on Iraq
Comment by Larry Ross
February 12, 2007

The US dropped thousands of tons of Agent Orange on Vietnam during the war in the 1960's, contaminating the land and people - killing and deforming some 4 million of the Vietnamese population that continues today - some 40 years later. Thousands of US and allied veterans were also contaminated with exposure to agent orange sprays, causing disease, disabilities and early deaths for many vets, genetic mutation that goes into their children and generations to come.

1)   What were new workers told about the dangers of their workplace?
2)   What % of workers were effected by nuclear-related diseases?
3)   What is the mortality rate among workers suffering from nuclear work diseases?
4)   What occupations at the nuclear plants were most dangerous, and were workers warned about these occupations and given any protective measures.
The Bush Administration is adopting the same denial tactics toward nuclear workers it is using towards soldiers complaining of diseases caused by DU poisoning.

Memo: Administration tried to cut payouts to nuke workers
by Peter Eisler, USA TODAY
December 5, 2006

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration repeatedly sought ways to limit payouts to nuclear weapons workers sickened by radiation and toxic material, according to a memo written by congressional investigators and obtained by USA TODAY.
The investigation focuses on a federal program created in 2000 to compensate people with cancers and other illnesses tied to their work at government and contractor-owned facilities involved in Cold War nuclear weapons production. About 98,000 cases have been filed under the program, and the Labor Department has approved compensation in about 24,000 of those cases. However, program records show that not all of those approved claims have been paid. full story

Nuclear Industry Workers Radiated In USA
Comment by Larry Ross
December 11, 2006

... DU munitions - shells, bombs and bullets, are combined with depleted uranium, a by-product of the nuclear industry. As a destroyer, tank-buster and killer, these weapons are much more effective and deadly than conventional munitions. As a result the USA and its allies have used DU weapons in four wars since the first Gulf war in 1991- increasing the DU tonnage used in each war.. But they explode on impact into millions of deadly, microscopic particles that slowly rise into the upper atmosphere, then blow and drift around the planet eventually settling to earth thousands of miles from where they are first used. As they have a half life of 4.5 billion years, they go on killing forever and infecting the gene pool, adults and children of all future generations. They cause many types of cancer, organ failure, other types of lingering killer diseases and horrific genetic mutations of foetuses.

  Waging Nuclear Genocide
Comment by Larry Ross
November 23, 2006

Although the following article was written 3 years ago, its message is still powerful and relevant today. Most people passively tolerate the systematic poisoning of people, their lands and the world. However DU poisoning lasts for eternity. It drifts around the planet, killing, deforming and genetically damaging everyone's children and descendants forever, whether in Washington, New York or Kabul. Psychopaths in the Pentagon deny, deny, deny and then smirk like George Bush. They are doing their professional duty. People accept that and forget. How long can the human race survive when we, so casually, resort to such widespread killing and torture?

Leuren Moret's article indicates that we are a seriously flawed species. They are deliberately using nuclear mass destruction weapons - that's what DU weapons are....

Global Nuclear Genocide? Women Say No
Comment by Larry Ross
March 2, 2006

The U.S. has used depleted uranium (D.U.) weapons in 4 wars (see below).
Britain and other members of U.S. military alliances have been complicit in D.U. usage and aware of the low-level radiation effects.
D.U. microscopic particles have been spread by air currents to Europe and Britain. It has a half life of 4,500,000,000 years, so can continue to spread over coming decades and centuries.. It can infect people with a number of fatal diseases as the following articles show, slowly killing or incapacitating many of them. It lasts forever and there is no cure.
Using such weapons is an attack on all humanity and all nations, as the particles will drift around the world forever.

Comment by Larry Ross
September 21, 2005

There are many important peace issues and Flyby News gives you vital information about them, as does this web site. Flyby also suggests constructive ways to help and things you can do.

NASA's Cassini space probe executed a flyby maneuver around the Earth on August18, 1999

This space ship was traveling at record speeds, more than 10 miles per second, and carrying more than 72 pounds of radioactive plutonium on board. It was only seconds away from a possible inadvertent reentry into Earth's atmosphere, which would have released more than 400,000 curies of radiation in a breathable/ingest able form. This could have resulted in millions of fatalities, and untold suffering for generations to come.
NoFlyby's Press Release, "The FORCE Behind Cassini" explains why NASA might have conducted such a high-risk civilian space mission. Flyby News covers this issue of the militarization of space and other concerns vital for life's survival in the 21st Century.

Radiation Expert Claims High-Radiation Readings Near Pentagon After 9/11 Indicates Depleted Uranium Used.
Two high profile radiation experts concur Pentagon strike involved use of a missile. Also Geiger counter readings right after the attack shows high levels of radiation 12 miles away from Pentagon crash site.
A radiation expert and high-ranking Army Major, who once headed the military's depleted uranium project, both contend the Pentagon was hit by missile, not a commercial jetliner, adding high radiation readings after the strike indicate depleted uranium also may have been used.
"I'm not an explosives or crash site expert, but I am highly knowledgeable in causes and effects related to nuclear radiation contamination.
What happened at the Pentagon is highly suspicious
, leading me to believe a missile with a depleted uranium warhead may have been used," said radiation expert Leuren Moret in a telephone conversation this week from her Berkeley, CA home.

Ban DU Weapons
Comment by Larry Ross
June 21, 2005

Everyone should see this DU documentary on Sunday June 26 at 11.00 pm on TV1 in NZ.
Poisoning the Iraq people and neighbouring states with DU weapons and residue is bad enough. But with a half life of 4.5 billion years, eventually DU dust will drift around the planet and contaminate all life.
That's all of us regardless of where we live, including our children, grandchildren and future generations.
Unless we can stop manufacture and use of this evil weapon (already used by the USA and UK in four wars), the whole planet will be poisoned.
It's time the NZ government took a position on banning DU weapons. Concerned citizens and nations took a stand to ban land mines. It was successful. The same kind of concern can apply to DU weapons which are far worse.
Ban them

D.U. WEAPONS CONTAMINATE THE WHOLE WORLD
Comment by Larry Ross
May 18, 2005

The radioactive microscopic dust residue from depleted uranium weapons has a half-life of 4.5 billion years and eventually drifts from wherever it was first used, around the world. It kills and causes life-threatening diseases wherever it goes, and also contaminates the gene pool causing hideously malformed foetuses.
The US and UK like it because it is such an effective battlefield weapon; so they keep defending it's usage.
They have used D.U. weapons in 4 wars so far. It also kills or contaminates many US and UK war veterans and their offspring. There is a very large amount of evidence of it's damage, and many groups working to outlaw such weapons.
The long-term effects around the world are potentially devastating for the human race, as D.U. goes on killing forever.

Comment by Larry Ross
April 27, 2005

This is a very powerful indictment of Bushism by an angry American lady. With great eloquence and insight she sees where Bush is leading the American people and the consequences for the world.
His poisoning of people with D.U. weapons, not just in Iraq, but eventually everywhere, means extinction for humanity - sooner for some, later for others. With a half life of 4.5 billion years, D.U. Microscopic particles drift around the world, poisoning, causing crippling diseases, and killing forever. There is no doubt whatsoever, that those using these insidious weapons, and those who order them to be used, are mass murderers, guilty of the most heinous war crimes and violations of international law. George Bush and Tony Blair know this - that they are war criminals - but they are willing to take any risks - multiple risks.

They Were Young Once, and Fit

Getting the attention of the American people is, for the most part, a futile exercise -- like screaming into the wind. When will we realize we are the terrorists, and our *weapon of mass destruction is Depleted Uranium?

February 2, 2005
Heads roll at Veterans Administration : Mushrooming depleted uranium (DU) scandal blamed
Preventive Psychiatry E-Newsletter charged Monday that the reason Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi stepped down earlier this month was the growing scandal surrounding the use of uranium munitions in the Iraq War.
Writing in Preventive Psychiatry E-Newsletter No. 169, Arthur N. Bernklau, executive director of Veterans for Constitutional Law in New York, stated, “The real reason for Mr. Principi’s departure was really never given, however a special report published by eminent scientist Leuren Moret naming depleted uranium as the definitive cause of the ‘Gulf War Syndrome’ has fed a growing scandal about the continued use of uranium munitions by the US Military.”
More on depleted uranium
It seems to be as lethal as claimed. The much demonized Leuren Moret seems vindicated. The horrific damage it caused in GW1 will be minor compared to the Iraq war today.
(Greenpeace cites a figure of 800+ tons used in GW1, up from the official figure cited below of 315 tons. Upper estimates for GW2 were over 2,500 tons of DU munitions used, up from the 1,700 tons cited below. ....Iraq is a nuclear war fall-out zone.)

Humanity has changed the genome of the entire planet forever.

MoD still publicly claims DU weapons are safe. However the UK army has issued a card to soldiers saying it can cause ill-health.
“A UN subcommission has ruled that the use of DU breaches the Geneva Convention and the Genocide Convention. DU has also been blamed for the effect of Gulf War syndrome among some 200,000 US troops.” About 29,000 UK troops could also be contaminated.

  MoD ‘Lied’ Over Depleted Uranium
by Neil Mackay and Amy Wilson
February 29, 2004

CLAIMS by the Ministry of Defence that depleted uranium (DU) is not a risk to life have been undermined by a Sunday Herald investigation that found the British army is telling soldiers in Iraq that it can cause ill-health.
The revelation has outraged the military, scientists and politicians. Studies have shown DU leads to cancers, birth defects, memory loss, damage to the immune system and neuro-psychotic disorders. But the MoD has claimed since the first Gulf war that “DU does not pose a risk to health or the environment”.
However, military sources have passed an MoD card to the Sunday Herald which is being handed to troops on active service in Iraq. It reads: “You have been deployed to a theatre where depleted uranium (DU) munitions have been used. DU is a weakly radioactive heavy metal which has the potential to cause ill-health. You may have been exposed to dust containing DU during your deployment.

D.U. WEAPONS PLAGUE IRAQIS - Weapons Dust Worries Iraqis
by Thomas D. Williams
November 1, 2004

Despite assurances from the U.S. military that depleted uranium from exploded munitions does not pose a significant health threat, Iraq's provisional government is asking the United Nations for help cleaning up the low-level radioactive, metal dust spread across local battlefields by U.S. and British forces during the Persian Gulf wars.
The request comes as the United States continues to defend depleted uranium weaponry - prized for its tank-piercing and bunker- or cave-smashing ability - against strong opposition by other countries, scientists and veterans organizations.
Great Britain, a major partner in the coalition now fighting in Iraq, has provided the U.N. with the coordinates where its forces used depleted uranium, also known as DU, in southern Iraq, but the United States has not. Britain and Germany are supplying money to train Iraqis in environmental science. The United Nations plans to survey for DU hot spots from both wars in Iraq and says it needs the coordinates for an effective survey.

British Study Concludes That 100,000 Civilian Deaths Have Been Caused By Iraq War's Violence
"...it is clear that whatever planning did take place was grievously in error.  The invasion of Iraq, the displacement of a cruel dictator, and the attempt to impose a liberal democracy by force have, by themselves, been insufficient to bring peace and security to the civilian population. ... [I]mperialism has resulted in more deaths, not fewer.  This political failure continues to cause scores of casualties among non-combatants. ... The lives of Iraqis are currently being shaped by the policies of the occupying forces and the military insurgents.  For the occupiers, winning the peace now demands a thorough reappraisal of strategy and tactics to prevent further unnecessary casualties.  -Dr. Richard Horton's commentary, "The War In Iraq: Civilian Casualties, Political Responsibilities," in The Lancet, Vol. 364, No. 9445. The Threat of Loose Nukes is One of Our Own Making
Nuclear terrorism, thankfully, is still only a specter, not a reality. But the recent wave of bloodshed in Russia underscores the urgency of the need to prevent terrorists capable of indiscriminate slaughter from acquiring nuclear bombs.
To its credit, the Bush administration has finally launched an ambitious initiative to better secure nuclear and radiological materials, particularly in violence-racked Russia. But unless the Global Threat Reduction Initiative, which was introduced in May, becomes part of a far more comprehensive approach to the challenges of nuclear theft and terrorism, it is destined to fall well short of its goal of safeguarding the American people from the threat of nuclear weapons.

IN LATE JULY more than 600 people showed up in Monterey to speak at a Federal Communications Commission hearing on ownership concentration in the news media. The participants were a diverse group, young and old, activists and workers, but they had a single consistent message: the mainstream news media have been doing a deplorable job of covering the day's most important stories.

MoD –Caught In Lie over DU weapons
Comment by Larry Ross
November 5, 2004

Why New Zealand Should Stay Nuclear-Free   Press Release
by Larry Ross
January 30, 2004
The Iraq War, New War Plans and Nuclear Doctrines      New Zealand's Nuclear-Free laws are under attack as being irrelevant, and a cold war relic. It's claimed that as the cold war is over, and U.S. has disarmed nuclear warships, N.Z. should rescind its Nuclear-Free laws.

Weapons of mass destruction were never found in Iraq, yet the country is today contaminated forever, because weapons of mass destruction have been used against it. Thousands of tonnes of radioactive waste were dumped on Iraq during Gulf Wars I and II and during the intervening years when bombing continued through the use of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition.   Green Left Weekly

Doug Rokke will speak in DC Sunday
by Chris Otten
January 8, 2004
Gulf War veteran Doug Rokke, depleted uranium munitions expert, will speak at the: Martin Luther King Memorial Library (9th & G NW) at 1:30 PM on Sunday, January 11, 2004.
Depleted Uranium Munitions (DUM) have been used in US battlezones since 1991, the first invasion of Iraq. Many scientists link Gulf War Syndrome to DUM and hence why 10,000+ Gulf War Veterans have come home and died
of mysterious ailments while 100,000+ are sick and continue to die.
These munitions are known to leave the regions of the planet where they are used a toxic wasteland for billions of years.
So the question is...will leaving Iraq a toxic wasteland bring Iraqi's democracy and freedom?
This information cannot be kept quiet because continued use of Depleted Uranium Munitions will leave our planet a barren toxic wasteland.     Chris O.

The perfect weapon: Its damage lasts 4.5 billion years
What's not to love, if you're the Pentagon? We pounded Saddam Hussein's army with depleted uranium ammo in Gulf War I and destroyed it on the ground. Maybe you've seen pictures of what we did to it;
GIs cleaning up afterward coined the term ``crispy critters'' to describe the fried corpses they found inside Iraqi tanks and trucks.

When it became obvious that the neoconservatives would succeed in turning the "war against terrorism" into war against the Muslim Middle East, I said that the consequences would be the return of the draft or US use of nuclear weapons.    Bush administration neoconservatives have concluded that reinstating the military draft would incite more opposition than inaugurating a new weapons program to produce "useable nukes."

Doug Rokke sits on the edge of his chair in a beige, could-be-anywhere hotel room in Carlton. He stares at you with an almost embarrassing intensity and is close to tears.    "It's lonely," he says slowly. "It's very lonely. I made a decision. I was given a job. I did my job. I learned something. I gave them an answer they didn't want. I became persona non grata. And the better parts of my life ended."

In the weeks leading up to the war on Iraq, TV screens across America were crowded with images of U.S. soldiers readying for upcoming battles with a crazed dictator who would stop at nothing. One clip after another showed U.S. soldiers racing to don $211 suits designed to protect them from the chemical and biological attacks they would surely suffer on the road to ousting Saddam Hussein.

Silent Radiation War Against All Life from   Ross Wilcock
June 4, 2003
Radiation from nuclear tests, depleted uranium(DU) weapons, nuclear power plants and disasters such as Chernobyl, results in long-term pollution, sometimes thousands of years, causing human cancers and death for generations to come. Yet this reality is small compared to the amount of radiation that would be released in an increasingly possible nuclear war or terrorist attacks on some of the incredibly vulnerable US nuclear power plants. The immediate and long term casualities could be in the millions.. The present silent nuclear radiation is a kind of nuclear war on mankind that is taking place today, and will increasingly plague mankind. It is a slow-moving weapon of mass destruction(WMD). The following papers educate and deal with this issue.
