War Bankrupting U.S.
Comment by Larry Ross, October 19, 2005
The counter (link below) shows over 200 Billion dollars spent, to date,
on the Iraq war alone. Another major war on Iran - estimated 3 times larger
than Iraq, added to the continuing Iraq war, would go a long way toward
bankrupting the U.S.
Add to this the cost of the Space Arms race, maintaining troups in 120
countries, keeping the large fleet of U.S. warships and aircraft operating,
maintaining the huge staff of Pentagonists, war planners, armed force
personnel and other staff, funding various arms research projects, and
purchasing various armaments. Overall the defence budget is about 350
billion dollars a year and growing. Its more than the next 5 countries
in the world spend on defence.
How can they justify it after the cold war has supposedly ended? How can
they sustain it?
Only by constantly inventing new enemies and justifying new wars, can
Bush and his Republican allies satisfy the needs of a growing military/industrial
complex. President Eisenhower warned Americans in 1960 about the growing
power of "the military-industrial complex". Now this has become
the military-industrial-political-scientific-academic complex, as so many
Politicians, Scientists and Academics depend on this complex of interests.
