Climate Change and Bush's Illegal Wars Comment by Larry Ross, April 6, 2007
The following collection of articles show that the climate crisis has become a very important in the US and around the world. But no thought seems to have been given to removing the basic blockages to effective remedial action to halt or reverse global warming. The Bush regime is engaged in draining the resources of the US to wage meaningless imperial wars to expand their empire. First Afghanistan, then Iraq and perhaps soon a much larger war against Iran. The cost and drain of US resources, and primary occupation of its military-industrial culture, is on their wars. The pollution of the environment by wars and preparing for war is criminal. Not only the massive poisoning of the Iraqi environment with Depleted Uranium weapons, or Agent Orange in Vietnam but the consuming of large amounts of fossil fuel to power their air raids, tanks and other military vehicles. Also, it is a nonsense to follow a Christian Fundamentalist President, who believes God will look after global warming and the environment, and therefore we need do little. Bush believes he gets messages from a God who approves his illegal wars and sanctions all his war crimes. In the eyes of Bush's God, these are not crimes, but steps toward a final battle between good and evil as predicted in the Bible. Rather than gently lead him away to a mental hospital for treatment where his delusions cannot harm others, America gives him the keys to a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons - enough to kill all life on the planet many times over. Not only that Congress genuflects to this deluded monster and legalises his right to wage sudden pre-emptive nuclear war, against any nation with the flimsiest of excuses and without validation. Congress also gave him permission to introduce nuclear weapons into conventional conflicts. America made Bush the most powerful man in history. Indeed, his blatant lies are repeated and honoured by leaders of the Democratic opposition, such as Hillary Clinton. Battalions of right wing nutters sing his praises, and will not tolerate any criticisms, while the mass media fawns over Bush and suppresses criticism and exposure. Given that Bush is preparing to launch his biggest war yet, and use nuclear weapons against Iran and that this could trigger a World War III, global warming important as it is to our future, seems secondary to stopping the Bush regime before he destroys our world. Indeed, focusing on global warming issues diverts attention from Bush's crimes and immediate threats to our planet. I don't advise giving up the effort to educate people and make them aware of the global warming threats. I suggest that the two issues be combined. People should learn that our world may be ended much sooner if they allow Bush and people like him to lead us, through lies and deception, into very destructive wars and use monstrous instruments of destruction and environmental pollution such as nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. If this link can be made, and Bush impeached or stopped, perhaps serious progress can be made toward correcting global warming.
