Why The Nuclear Research Centre Needs Your Support
Dear Supporters, Sponsers and Donors
We need financial support to continue the work of the New Zealand Nuclear-Free Peacemaking Association and accomplish our objectives. In 1980 our objectives were to make New Zealand nuclear-free and change the foreign policy so that New Zealand could become a neutral independent state, specializing in international peacemaking.
We organised national and international lecture tours, press releases, helped form local groups, lobbied MP's and local councillors, organised a national nuclear-free zone campaign for cities, towns and regions and issued a newsletter. In 1984 with the election of the Labour government, New Zealand adopted a nuclear-free policy. In 1987 this was confirmed by the Nuclear-Free Zone Act of Parliament.
Although NZ has maintained its military alliances, the Association is pleased that NZ has become more active in international peacemaking and peacekeeping operations, such as in Bougainville, Fiji and East Timor. Internationally NZ has demonstrated many initiatives for peace and nuclear disarmament. We have questioned the necessity for an ever-escalating nuclear and conventional arms race and warned fellow New Zealanders and the world about the dire consequences if this situation continues. NZ has given increased support to the United Nations. New Zealand has become more independent in its judgements - giving support to the US for the war against the Taliban, who sheltered Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda terrorists in Afghanistan, but not yielding to US pressures to support their illegal and unnecessary war against Iraq. This took great courage. For the first time NZ did not support its major allies (US, UK, & Australia) in a war. A big step for a small country. We feel that our recommendations backed by facts and reasoning, and those of other peace organizations and individuals, have been accepted by the majority of New Zealanders. Although NZ has endured some adverse pressures from our allies, and from traditionalists and militarists in NZ, a new foreign policy has been emerging since 1984.
Although the cold war has ended, the nuclear and conventional arms races are accelerating. International treaties to limit the arms race have been discarded by the US. New US doctrines have lowered the nuclear threshold, so that nuclear weapons may be more readily used in warfare, rather than treated as a deterrent or weapon of last resort. The US has arbitrarily named potential enemies and launched wars not approved by the UN and not justified - all in the name of "war on terrorism". However most analysts believe this is a counterproductive strategy, producing more terrorists, alienating other nations, and threatening the world with endless wars. These may destroy and pollute large areas, kill millions and result in escalating nuclear wars that can annihilate most life on earth.
The world situation is more threatening today - a nuclear world war III more likely- than at any time since the use of nuclear weapons in 1945.
For these reasons the NZ Nuclear-Free Peacemaking Association wants to become much more active and creative in pursuing our objectives with new campaigns, both within New Zealand and internationally. Time is running out for humanity.
YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED
Although we have proven ourselves with a successful NZ nuclear-free zone campaign and the continuation of NZ peacemaking initiatives along the lines of our objectives, our bank account is below zero. We do need help from people who appreciate our contribution, wish us to continue, and share our perceptions of a world in dire peril needing effective peace action.. We ask you make a donation - as generous as you can make it - to help our work for survival of the human race in a nuclear-free, just, society.
With many thanks,
Larry Ross, Secretary
