US Democracy Becoming a Fascist State

Comment by Larry Ross, January 5, 2007

James Meek describes below, an important step toward the US  becoming a fascist state. I don't believe that the Democrats, now in control of the Senate and Congress, will make much difference to this. That is because so many of them accept Bush's lies and frauds about his various wars and their willingness to escalate the conflicts.

If they oppose Bush's 'war on terror's they would be accused as being 'soft on terror' or 'aiding the terrorists' etc.

The same nonsensical accusations would apply if they opposed Bush's various steps toward fascism. That is enough to keep them silent and acquiescent.

The effect on US society will be to reduce expressions of criticism, dissent or exposure of Bush's lies and frauds. Already being timid, apathetic, uninvolved and in denial, many people are likely to become even more so. That is because they fear repercussions if a Government agency found they expressed thoughts which opposed or exposed the emerging Bush dictatorship.

As other leaders observe how easy it has been for Bush to impose fascism on the US , so long as he uses 'war on terror' justifications, they may decide to try the same tactics in their countries. Blair in the UK and Howard in Australia, have already made significant steps along this road. They certainly embraced Bush's lies to make war. They and their mass media, endlessly repeated those lies as truth. The people were originally fooled. Now the lies have been exposed as lies, but they continue the slaughter in spite of exposure. The people seem to have adjusted to this and protest has all but dried up. Blair and Howard are good liars for Bush. They have both been re-elected for their efforts toward killing 655,000 Iraqis and dominating the Middle East.

The opposition has been pathetically weak - almost non-existent.

People should not deny the realities of what's happening to their world.

Had the Labour Government not refused to be railroaded into supporting the Iraq war, and had Don Brash been elected and sent NZ combat troops to Iraq, the same process would be happening in New Zealand , as is happening in the USA , UK and Australia.

So New Zealand is a lucky country for the moment. I wonder how many Kiwis are aware of this, or care enough to do something about this threat. Our situation can be very easily reversed, and New Zealand swept into Bush's 'wars on terror'. All it takes is a weakened resolve by Labour, or a change of government.

W Pushes Envelope on US Spying

By James Gordon Meek, The New York Daily News, January 4, 2007

New postal law lets Bush peek through your mail.

WASHINGTON - President Bush has quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant, the Daily News has learned.

The President asserted his new authority when he signed a postal reform bill into law on Dec. 20. Bush then issued a "signing statement" that declared his right to open people's mail under emergency conditions.

That claim is contrary to existing law and contradicted the bill he had just signed, say experts who have reviewed it.

Bush's move came during the winter congressional recess and a year after his secret domestic electronic eavesdropping program was first revealed. It caught Capitol Hill by surprise.
