9/11 ATTACK: WHO DID IT? Comment by Larry Ross, February 18, 2007
George Monbiot has been one of the best commentators on US foreign policy, the Iraq war and the Bush Administration. He now claims that one of the hundreds of films and articles questioning the official 9/11 story - a film called "Loose Change" is a "virus sweeping the world" He claims it infects "opponents of the Bush government, sucks their brains out through their eyes and turns them into gibbering idiots". Much as I respect Monbiot and his work, I don't agree with his implication that there are no serious unanswered questions about 9/11 and that therefore Bush's official account on the cause of that tragedy is correct. His article is brilliant and makes one think, doubt, and reconsider one's previous opinions. That's fine, but to suggest that all serious questioners of the official 9/11 story are "gibbering idiots" is going too far. There are just too many highly qualified professionals questioning 9/11, for anyone to try and dismiss the lot as "gibbering idiots" and "conspiracists ". I was shocked that someone like Monbiot could come out with such arrogant, ignorant, almost imperial, statements. Monbiot does not mention that there is an impressive collection of academics and professionals who question 9/11. The one he does mention is David Ray Griffin, who he belittles as "a theology professor,...who also happens to be the high priest of the 9/11 conspiracists." He implies that "a theology professor" is not really qualified to study and write about 9/11 questions. Those many professionals who doubt the official story are dismissed as "conspiracists". Monbiot is doing his best to outlaw 9/11 doubts, and foster belief in Bush's official explanations. But Bush and his neocon regime are war criminals who lied to the public to get their support for his illegal war against Iraq and are now doing the same to get their support for a war on Iran . His lies and his killing of 250,000+ Iraqis for no legitimate reason other than they oppose the invader, not only makes him a war criminal but also a criminal against the US Constitution. It is one of the biggest frauds of all time. The 9/11 attack boosted Bush's popularity and he was able to get whatever he wanted from Congress and the Senate. He requested and got funds for his wars and authority to conduct such wars in whatever ways he wanted, including the possible use of nuclear weapons. Even if people believe he had nothing to do with 9/11 and had no knowledge that it was going to happen, he could not have even thought about waging war on Iraq without being empowered by the 9/11 attack. The neoconservatives needed "another Pearl Harbour " as mentioned in their papers, in order to activate the American people so they could launch their long-planned war on Iraq . 9/11 has proved to be an essential, empowering factor to the Bush regime. Monbiot does not mention this strong neoconservative motive for staging a 9/11 " Pearl Harbour ". He offers an explanation for the collapse of Building 7 (which fell into its footprint, even though not struck by a plane). It was not very convincing. For these and a number of other reasons, I cannot believe Monbiot, who like the George Bush regime, supporters and zealots, claim that 9/11 questioners are "conspiracists" and that opponents who question 9/11 had "their brains sucked out through their eyes". This paper raises questions about Monbiot and his future writings. Readers can check out Monbiot's dubious claims against some of the 9/11 evidence and testimony on this site.
