51% of Americans Say "Impeach Bush" Comment by Larry Ross, January 19, 2007
The window of opportunity for peace action is only about 2 months, according to David Swanson. If this happens, the casualties will be enormous - perhaps in the millions. There will be a huge military/political momentum generated to continue. Many retaliatory actions by Iran and others will ensure that the war will continue to escalate. Other nuclear weapon states could become directly involved creating massive global destruction with millions killed and endless wars. If you decide to wait and see what happens before you act or react, then you will be too late. The key point that cannot be emphasised enough is that peace actions taken after Bush has launched his big war are very unlikely to be effective. He will try and fool Americans with propaganda, lies and tricks, as he did with his illegal invasion and continuing murder of Iraqis. One million or more killed and Iran radiated and devastated, cannot be recalled and Bush's huge new war suddenly stopped. Only impeaching Bush may actually stop his war plans, or taking other immediate actions that can help stop him now, before it's too late. That has a chance of being effective. Just think how you would feel if you have done nothing to stop and/or impeach Bush in time, but you know you actually could have done so, or at least donated funds to help groups and individuals dedicated to stop the Bush War Juggernaut. In other words you could have done something, but decided not to bother. Think of the human family, your children and grandchildren and the kind of world Bush will create for them if people let him continue. Your protest and anger after Bush launches his war on Iran will be too late.

If Beale Street Could Talk - Part 2 Impeach Disney and General Electric By David Swanson, t r u t h o u t | Guest Contributor, January 16, 2007 Click to read Part 1. Remarks at the National Conference for Media Reform in Memphis, Tennessee, January 13, 2007. By any serious standard of journalism, impeachment should be in the news right now. This illustrates the worst problem with our media. It's not how they cover stories. It's how they do not cover stories. A Newsweek poll a while back said that 51 percent of Americans want Bush impeached and 44 percent do not. That's about double the support there was for impeaching Clinton when it was in the news every single day. Dozens of cities have passed resolutions for impeachment. State legislatures have introduced the same. One outgoing congresswoman introduced articles of impeachment in December. Dozens of scholars have written books advocating for impeachment. There are DVDs, forums, marches, rallies, protests. A week ago, we packed a huge ballroom for an impeachment forum, and to make it easy, it was the ballroom in the National Press Club. The media couldn't make the elevator trip to be there. And of course, the evidence of impeachable offenses is clear and overwhelming, but rarely presented in the media. The number one reason that Congress members and their staff tell you in private that they are not yet impeaching is fear of the media. The number two reason is fear of Nancy Pelosi. The number one reason that well-meaning citizens tell you they don't want impeachment consists of a PR strategy. People want to present an image that does not include what the corporate media says impeachment is. It is a long journey to move from seeing this as smart and strategic to seeing it as a self-defeating surrender to the corporate media. |
