The sickness of Americans

From Carol Wolman, January 18, 2004

Americans are living in a psychotic bubble. The Bush regime is a disaster for the average American. Bush has wrecked the economy and the environment, lowered the standard of living, raised the paranoia level, and stirred up a hornet's nest in Iraq. Yet the polls show him likely to be re-elected. Perhaps the polls are all lying. Or are Americans completely out of touch with reality, lacking all common sense? It's sick!

Bush is taking us on a sort of manic binge. Spend, spend, spend as if there is no tomorrow. Foreign adventures, flights to the moon, tax cuts for the rich- who is going to pay for all this? Whatever happened to the aim of leaving a good legacy for the children and grandchildren? It's evil to leave them with such a burden of debt and misery.

The mania is very evil. It involves murder, theft, and endless lying- what one would expect from people who flaunt the Skull and Bones. Yet we the people tolerate it, tolerate the pirates, participate in their schemes. We sick Americans fight in the pirate armies, and share in the loot, even if only a little trickles down. Every time we put gas in the car, watch CNN or Fox, shop at Walmart, we are complicit.

We all know that the high American standard of living (dropping quickly, though) is maintained on the backs of starving people in bankrupt countries.
We all know that our agents teach torture, foment civil wars, and generally make the world hellish for people all over the globe.

Especially sick are the "Christians" who suspend all discernment as they drive their SUV's to rallies for Bush. Their attitude seems to be "He says God chose him, and Pat Robertson backs him up, so Bush can do no wrong. "

Many of these people are hateful. They write hate mail to Bush critics, they eat up the hate talk shows, they give peace demonstrators the finger or worse. How can Christians be so hateful? Jesus was all about love.

Such hatefulness and complicity with evil used to be called by its rightful name, sin. The word has gone out of fashion; it's time to revive it.

Lying is a sin. Stealing is a sin. Invading another country on the basis of lies is a sin. Corrupting and controlling the press of a democratic nation is a sin. Shredding the Constitution which one has sworn to uphold and defend is a sin. Turning a blind eye to such wickedness is also a sin.

We Americans are sinners for allowing this evil to continue. Our lack of clarity, our fears and weaknesses, our ambivalences and willingness to compromise with evil are all sinful. We need the love of Jesus to help us change our ways. In His name, Carol Wolman, MD

Jesus said to them,
"Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."
Mark 2: 17
